METABOLIC CRUSADERS ARE ON THE CASE!
A cupcake by any other name is still a cupcake and won’t help you get up that hill!
As a avid cyclist, understanding and using 3 statements will transform you & improve your performance and health:
- Food is my fuel… I am what I absorb!
- I eat Consistent with my Goals!
- I don’t eat that! (things that hinder me) …. breads, pastas, cereals, white potatoes, sugars, artificial sweeteners, things made from flour, sweets
All carbohydrates are not equal. There are carbs that enhance your performance/Recovery and there are carbs that diminish your performance/Recovery. Some carbs are value adding to an athlete’s performance and recovery and some carbs are non value adding to an athlete’s performance and recovery.
I have watched a lot of posts about sugar and ways people are trying to comfort themselves with concoctions that they feel are better substitutes. THEY SUBSTITUTE! Replace something harmful they know is harmful with something that sounds not as harmful. Many times, they are just finding another way to be unhealthy, but feeling they are being healthier!
These tactics tend to continue to “FEED” the real problem and often makes it worse. SO LET’S DISCUSS WHAT MIGHT BE THE REAL PROBLEM ….

Sugar is without question the cocaine of the free world … they get away with hiding that drug in “FOOD”
Generally in the United Stated, people are overfed … yet starving to death at the same time
Problem: we taste something fatty or sugaring we get an immediate impulse to want more of it.
Food industry’s objective is not to give you a healthy product, but to give you a product that will make you buy it, that will last a long time, and will make a lot of profit for the company producing it.
Bread, sugar & table salt trick your body into thinking you are getting specific nutrients … so your body stays hungry for them & your cells do not get nourished … and as long as the body is not getting nourished, you are starving on a cellular level. People are chronically starved of nutrients, so they keep eating & eating & eating.
But still … The biggest problem with sugar is addiction!
People understand addiction to alcohol, drugs, liquor, but they do not understand addiction to foods … They don’t understand the invisible prison.
People know they shouldn’t do it, but they have no idea why they are doing it! Food company engineer addictions into food. They have identified what makes food appeal to people … create concoctions that taste quite good with an addictive component.
Sugar … makes you momentarily happy (elation). It’s only temporary so you end up buying another. If you want to sell more … manipulate the chemical structure of the food to have less nutrients, but give the impression when first digested it that it is very fulfilling … create an addict of your customer … you have a customer for life!!!
FAT FREE = LOADED WITH SUGAR
problem is that once the sugar is ingested it turns to fat! (high insulin responses … fat producing hormones).
Imagine a 2 lbs bag of sugar with a label on it that says FAT FREE … It’s actually true, but so misleading!
Sugar after your Liver’s glycogen stores are full enter the bloodstream as fat! Fat is good for you, but the key is getting the right kind of fat.
SUGAR BY ANOTHER NAME:
High Fructose corn syrup … comes from corn … not natural … It is highly isolated nutrient, so concentrated, so refined, chemically manipulated version of something otherwise healthy that is now not in a healthy form. The # 1 source of carbs in the US is Fructose, and it is highly addictive.
In 1900 average person exposed to 15-25g/day
Presently, the average person is consuming 70-80g/day many taking in 120-150g/day, literally 10x the amount they were taking in a century ago. That exposure can change brain chemistry & lead to addiction!!!
Nature delivers things as complex nutrients, not highly isolated!
Bread & fluffy stuff like breads are converted into sugar
within minutes after eating them, They become sugar, so
cut back or avoid breads, muffins, pastries, etc.
If you are trying to reduce your sugar intake, your definition of sugar needs to expand to include flours, breads, pastas, cereals, potatoes, corn waffles, etc.
In the US we are eating 150lbs sugar/year/79 lbs High Fructose Corn Syrup. This is often 22 teaspoon sugar /day nothing moderate about that!
The more sugar we are eating, the bigger increase in chronic disease!
Sugar increases beta endorphin in brain … that’s a feel good opiate like substance.
When you are stressed it’s why you want to eat comfort foods
sets up a virtual delivery system of sugar right into body fat.
It’s not fat that makes you fat …it’s sugar!
it’s easy & cheap to produce foods that become sugar!
Like drug addicts, people like their hit … their beta endorphin high … their rush
They are looking to sooth themselves … and become habituated to the effect and need more & more & more. White sugar and many of the substitutes are a drugs!
FOOD KILLS MORE PEOPLE THAN ANY OTHER DRUG ON EARTH EVEN ALL OTHER DRUGS COMBINED!
WHY DON’T PEOPLE STOP … BECAUSE … people don’t stop because they don’t know the nature of the trap!
We worry about crack, cocaine, heroin and smoking and alcohol … but as much PREMATURE death comes by SUGAR.
DIETS ARE TEMPORARY … LIFESTYLES CHANGES IS ALL THAT WILL WORK …DIETS ARE TEMPORARY … BEING HEALTHY IS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS TEMPORARY!
DEFINITION OF A DIET OR FOOD PLAN IS THE FOODS THAT AN ORGANISM HABITUALLY EATS TO SUSTAIN HIMSELF!
not feeding ourselves food that we are biologically adapted to process!
The idea is not to feel deprived!!!
SO THE REAL PROBLEM IS WE ARE LOOKING FOR A FIX… AND TRYING TO GET IT WITH SOMETHING SIMILAR, BUT NOT AS BAD. HAS THAT EVER REALLY SOLVED AN ISSUE THAT HAS TO DO WITH EVEN A SLIGHT ADDICTION TYPE PROCESS IN OUR BRAINS.
Almost all Man-made foods our bodies do not know how to process … and this causes hormonal stress!
Cake is cake, flour is flour, sugar is sugar, pasta is pasta … putting a healthier type name on it fools you but not your bodies!

SO … KEEP ADDING IN GOOD STUFF INTO YOUR MEAL PLAN AND LET IT CROWD OUT THE BAD STUFF!
Bottom Line: deal with this addictive substance like you would alcohol or drugs … If it is stopping you from living the lifestyle you want to Just say “I don’t eat sugar, it’s chemical substitutes, or anything made with sugar added”!
