About 11 weeks ago I was asked to write my Definiteness of Purpose (DMP) in 400 words or less!
You would think that this should just roll out of your mouth in one succinct statement, especially if that person, like me, has been on this earth 64 years.  That’s a long time to focus on what you wanted to do with your life and who you wanted to do it for!  So it should have just rolled out of my mouth as easy as “I’m doing well and you” …  But it did not.

Dr. Napoleon Hill defines this process by stating; Truly, “thoughts are things,” and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a BURNING DESIRE for their translation into riches, or other material objects. Dr.Hill wrote that having a Definite Major Purpose is the starting point of all achievement and that all individual achievement begins with the adaptation of a definite major purpose and a specific plan for its attainment.

My DMP, was actually something that was a theme throughout my life but constantly evolved downward based on circumstance.  As I thought about it … I had to sort out the difference between what I wanted to do and what I settled on doing base on what obstacles were in the way!

I have actually done many aspects of my DMP but what felt like a limited “Trial” Basis with a door open to run out of if it was too big a commitment.  Psychologists might call this fear of Success and cynical people might just call me a coward and say … “If you’re scared … Just say you’re Scared”.  Others might simply remind me that playing small doesn’t serve anyone!

So as pen hit paper I wrote it out in 400 words 8 times in 8 weeks before I got something that was comfortable to say.  I felt good.

I felt even better when I was told to write it again with up to 3000 words.  It seem to come to life in my imagination and now I felt I could not live unless I do this!

Then I was asked to express it in 1 sentence ..I WAS STUMPED!

I began to write, rewrite, get rid of non-definitive words, thoughts and ideas and keep only what was absolutely essential. It was here I remembered … homework assignments:

“Visualize my new reality daily as a service to others”

“Change my mindset from I have to … to I get to”

I crossed out everything that was not in compliance with these two statements and what was left was …

and I am sure I will edit and perfect this even more … but It is a huge BRICK in what I’m building!
